A new conservation system for Little Liuqiu goes into effect The Pingtung County Government announced that it will collect “tourism conservation fees” starting July 1, 2024, and promoted the designation of “core zones” and the delisting of sea urchins as a protected species.

Due to the prosperous development of tourism, the sea resources of Liuqiu Township in Pingtung County are gradually declining. The Pingtung County Government has promoted a number of important conservation measures this year, including the collection of tourism conservation fees, the designation of a “core area” and the removal of “Mei's long sea urchins” and “Mouthgill sea urchins” from the conservation target.

In order to sustainably manage the natural ecological resources and enhance the public's concept of conservation, the county government has collected a tourism conservation fee since July 1, 113, which covers the intertidal zone of the three districts of Suanfu, Yuchengwei, and Tuozaiping, at a rate of NT$60 per person (exemptions are given to one person from the fee for Ryukyu villagers, children under the age of three, and the mentally and physically challenged and their accompanying persons).

In order to facilitate the payment, the county government has commissioned 7-ELEVEN ibon to sell the tickets, and from now on, people can purchase tickets at ibon machines in 7-ELEVEN outlets nationwide or the ibon ticketing system (website: https://ticket.ibon.com.tw/) (ibon operation QA is detailed in the “Chiu-Liu Eco-Conservation Website”). Tickets are valid until November 30th and can be used in the intertidal zone of Suanfu, Yu Chengwei, and Tuozaiping, so please follow the rules and contact professional tour guides to enter the area before traveling.

According to the survey, in recent years, the coral cover of the Ryukyu sea area has declined, and even lost the function of coral reefs, and the intertidal sea urchins (Meiji long sea urchins and gill sea urchins) have flourished, seriously eroding the reefs, affecting the growth of intertidal vegetation, and jeopardizing the biological habitat environment. In order to effectively protect the resources, the county government has promoted the designation of a “core zone” adjacent to the Tau Tsai Ping Intertidal Conservation Demonstration Area, which includes all aquatic plants and animals (except for Mui's long sea urchins and mouthgill sea urchins), and is closed to all human beings (except for local residents and researchers), so as to ensure that the organisms can reproduce, which in turn will produce the effect of “seed dispersal”. In addition, “Mui's sea urchins” and “mouthgill sea urchins” were removed from the conservation target, and “giant sea shells” and “corals (including coral reefs)” were included in the list of protected species to ensure ecological balance and enhance the effectiveness of conservation. In recent years, due to climate change and the rise of tourism, the biomass of the Ryukyu Sea has declined and resources have been depleted, so conservation is a matter of great urgency. The county government has promoted a number of conservation measures, not only to raise the public's awareness of conservation, but also to inject resources into the local community to jointly promote ecological conservation work.
