Intertidal Habitat Restoration
At Dazaiping in Liuqiu, the massive proliferation of burrowing sea urchins (Echinometra mathaei) and collector sea urchins (Tripneustes gratilla) has led to the degradation of seagrass, seaweed, and coral reef habitats, resulting in an "urchin barren" phenomenon. Studies indicate that removing more than 70% of the sea urchins can effectively improve habitat conditions and reduce urchin recruitment. To restore the intertidal ecology, the Center has been commissioned to conduct large-scale sea urchin removals using zoned digging and crushing methods. Pilot results from 2025 demonstrate that sea urchin remains are rapidly consumed by other organisms without producing odor, proving the ecological restoration and execution feasibility of this approach.
